How to make your own T-shirt yarn?

Don't throw away those old T-shirts, give them new meanings. Make your own T-shirt yarn!
The bigger T-shirt the longer yarn, the older the more vintage the yarn will look.  If you are using a new T-shirt, no problem. Just make sure you wash the T-shirt (old or new) before making the yarn.

Materials: T-shirt (no seam on the sides only), collar cutter or scissor,

Can you use the T-shirt with seams?  Yes, you can.  We will show you how to use the T-shirt with seams in the next tutorial.

Steps:

1
.
Cut a line directly under the sleeves and cut off the hem on the bottom of the shirt.

We are only going to use the middle part of the t shirt to make the continuous long yarn.

Discard the upper part and the hem.

2.
Fold the t shirt in half but leave 1 - 1. . 5 inch space from the invisible seam (fold line).

3.  Leaving 1 inch space on the top, and then cut 1 inch or 1 1/2 inch wide into strips (don't cut to the top)
If you would like to make the chunky yarn, cut it into 2 inch or 3 inch or whatever you are comfortable.

5.  Unfold the strips, find the invisible seam and cut diagonally from the mid point.
(I found out it is easier to put the invisible seam through your arm while you are cutting it diagonally. Shown below.)
Upon complete the cut, you should have created ONE long strip.

6.
Pull the strip tightly to stretch the fabric, thus create tube shape.

7.  Keep pulling until the end of the long strip

8.  Roll it into a ball, or ... if you have a spinner, spin it into a ball and keep it nicely.

**Small tip to keep your ball nicely:  Use a paper toilet roll,  make a small cut on one side, put one end of the yarn into the cut, and then start rolling it into a ball.  Or use the cardboard (I usually use the postcard flyer), roll the paper into a tube, tape the loose end for easy storage.

Now it's time to start your new project with your own t-shirt yarn.

How about the upper part of the T-shirt?  Don't throw it away, keep it for the small projects.  Next time we will share with you how use the T-shirt with seams and how to join the end of T-shirt yarn together :)
